Guiding Visitors in Navigating a Cargo Ship Through the Eisenhower Lock

Project

Captain Your Own Ship

Year

2023

As part of the "Captain Your Own Ship" immersive experience at the Seaway Visitor Center at Eisenhower Lock, I coordinated production and managed agile workflows for a dynamic interactive exhibit. Visitors use realistic ship controls—including a steering wheel and throttle—to navigate their vessel through detailed 3D environments such as challenging river rapids and the precise navigation required to enter the Eisenhower Lock. My leadership ensured seamless integration of engaging gameplay mechanics, realistic physics, and visually compelling 3D modeled graphics, delivering an authentic, hands-on experience that vividly demonstrates the critical role locks play in maritime navigation and the extensive efficiency of cargo ship transportation within the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The four monitor positioning created an immersive experience. Combined with custom sound design and different weather modes, visitors were placed right on the ship as they steered it through the lock.

In a secondary interactive in the space, visitors scrubbed through an animation showing the relative amount of cargo different types of transportation systems enabled - demonstrating the vast size of the cargo ships that pass through the locks. This was controlled via a spinbrowser and built in Unity.
